There are different reasons to have a tooth pulled out. The most common reason is when people need to get their wisdom teeth removed, but there are other cases when removing one or more teeth may be necessary. Sometimes the procedure itself is not the most difficult part since the aftercare can be troublesome and difficult, that is why we talk about tooth extraction aftercare 101.
Why are teeth removed?
Teeth may need to be removed due to different reasons. As stated before, removing wisdom teeth is the most common extraction that we see at our offices. However, sometimes we may need to remove teeth due to the following reasons:
Deep tooth decays: Sometimes a decay has reached the root and beyond that, not even a root canal would save the tooth.
Orthodontics: Sometimes some extra space may be needed for orthodontics, that is why orthodontists may pull out one or more teeth to open some space for braces or other orthodontic treatments.
Trauma: A hard hit to the mouth can completely kill a tooth, so dentists will need to pull it out. You can take a look at hockey players to see how this can be the case.
Tooth extraction aftercare instructions
The best tip that we can give is to follow your dentist’s instructions. Some dentists have been practicing for so long and have so much experience with cases like yours, so they will give you the best possible options. However, we give the following instructions to most of our patients.
Your dentist will leave a gauze pad after finishing the treatment, you will need to bite it down for the first three hours to help to aid the creation of a blood clot.
Do not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours.
Do not drink from a straw or do anything that involves sucking.
Take your medications as prescribed.
Try to take a day off to rest, avoid any hard physical activities for the first 24 hours.
Only eat soft foods for the first couple of days.
When to call a dentist?
It is normal to feel discomfort and even pain during the first couple of days after tooth extraction. However, you should call a dentist when you experience any of the following symptoms:
Fever or white pus coming from the extraction area (infection signs)
Nausea and vomiting
Swelling or redness on the area
